Message formatting tips

Entrance builds each text from the row. The column title in braces is a slot, and the cell is what the person reads.

Hey {Name}, Ernesto from Ernesto’s Home and Yard Repair here. I repaired your {repair type} in {month}. Any repair booked before New Year’s is 20 percent off. Reply if you want it on the calendar.

That sentence works when repair type is “fence” and month is “January.” It fails when the cell was filled in for a spreadsheet, not for a sentence:

Hey Elsie, Ernesto from Ernesto’s Home and Yard Repair here. I repaired your multiple in June 3, 2021. Any repair booked before New Year’s is 20 percent off.

“Multiple” and “June 3, 2021” are doing a job in the sheet. They are nonsense in the text. Fix the cell, or take that field out of the message.

Check three rows before you trust the column: a short value, a long value, and a blank. A blank becomes a hole in the sentence. A value that only makes sense next to a header, like “Y” or “n/a”, will be sent as “Y” or “n/a”.

The sheet itself needs a Name column and a number column. Everything else is optional until the message names it.

On the campaign setup, under the message, “Test your message” sends one filled-in copy to your phone. Read that copy. The segment count is calculated after the variables are filled in, so the test is also how you see whether a long name pushed the text into a second segment.
